St Teresa of Calcutta famously said, "If you want to change the world, go home and love your family." This beautiful Catholic principal reminds us that it is in our smallest and most intimate spheres of human relationship where we receive our primary education in both faith and virtue. As a family, or as an individual, consider the simplest, most immediate way to perform a work of mercy, then expand from there. Ideas:
-Take on the chore of cooking dinner to give the person who usually cooks a break
-Buy food for a stranger who tells you they are hungry
-Work as a family to prepare a meal for the Meal Train and deliver it together
-Take a loved one out for coffee to talk about your spiritual life and pray together
-Fill the dog's water dish, offering that chore as an act of love for Jesus
-Volunteer at or deliver donations to the food pantry together as a family
-Call a relative you know is ill to see how they are doing
-Visit a friend or family member in the hospital
-Check in on elderly or homebound neighbors and ask if they need help with shoveling, odd jobs around the house, etc.
-Make an anonymous donation to help with funeral/burial expenses
-Speak to Jesus often; ask him to teach you how to be more patient and forgiving
-Sit in silence with a friend or family member who is grieving
